Lingual Braces
(Harmony System)

Lingual Braces in Ginza, Tokyo

Lingual braces are attached to the back of your teeth, so they are hard to see when you talk or smile. Dr. Hitomi Uchida uses the Harmony lingual system, with brackets and wires made to fit your teeth, and explains your treatment in English.

Is lingual orthodontics right for you?

Lingual braces can treat most of the same problems as regular braces, including crowding, gaps and bite problems. They suit people who want fixed braces that others are unlikely to notice. Half lingual treatment uses lingual braces on the upper teeth and regular braces on the lower teeth.

How treatment works

  1. Consultation: We check your teeth and discuss your goals in English.

  2. Diagnosis: We take scans, photos and X-rays and make your treatment plan.

  3. Bonding: Your custom brackets are attached to the back of your teeth.

  4. Adjustments: You visit regularly so we can adjust the wires.

  5. Retainers: After the braces are removed, a fixed retainer is bonded behind your front teeth. You also wear a removable retainer for at least 20 hours a day for about as long as your active treatment took. After that, Dr. Uchida recommends wearing it while you sleep for life.

Usually 1.5 to 3 years. The retention period that follows lasts about as long as the active treatment, with a fixed retainer plus a removable retainer worn at least 20 hours a day, and then at night for life.

Possible risks and side effects

  • The tongue may feel sore or irritated for the first few weeks

  • Speech may sound slightly different at first

  • Braces are harder to clean, which raises the risk of tooth decay and gum problems

  • Teeth may feel sore after adjustments

  • Root shortening, gum recession or jaw joint discomfort can occur

  • Some cases need tooth extraction or miniscrews

  • Teeth may shift back if retainers are not worn, and a fixed retainer can come loose and need repair
